Drone connectivityLearned model tested on simulated missions

Predicted radio coverage reduced signal loss along simulated routes.

A clear flight path can still lose its signal. A simulated city lets a planner account for coverage before choosing the route.

The task

Build a radio model of Times Square. Vary the transmitter, frequency and drone height, then use what the model learns to plan routes with less signal loss and estimate where interference comes from.

Edited demonstration brief

The result

Fewer signal gaps came at the cost of longer routes.

Predicted signal maps helped the planner avoid more dead zones, at the cost of longer routes. Some destinations still had unavoidable signal loss.

Tested against ray-traced simulations in one neighborhood; no field measurements or real drone flights.

Recorded simulation

The shortest route and the radio-aware route face different signal gaps.

Compare the shortest route with a route chosen using predicted radio coverage.

A clear path through the city can still lose the radio link.

The world we created

Sionna RT traces signals around buildings in a Times Square neighborhood. Different transmitter positions, frequencies and heights produce coverage maps, including places no sensor has measured.

What this enables

A learned model approximates those maps so a route planner can use them quickly. A separate experiment works backward from signal readings to an interference source. The routes are planned by a conventional algorithm.

Generate

Ray tracing mapped coverage around buildings.

Vary radio settings and transmitter positions. Buildings and their materials shape each simulated coverage map.

Learn

A learned model predicted coverage from radio settings.

Train a model on the simulated maps so a route planner can use predicted coverage.

Test

Unseen missions tested connectivity against route length.

Compare route choices in unseen simulated missions, including the tradeoff between connectivity and distance.

The ray tracer supplies both the training maps and the reference used to check the route choices. These results come from simulation in one neighborhood.

Original research artifacts

The original files retain the recorded measurements and model details.
